Ladder creates upward mobility for American job seekers and simplifies hiring for employers. Right now, we're helping job seekers attend 3-14 week classes to become certified nursing assistants (CNAs), financing their tuition and placing them with employers immediately upon completion. For many, Ladder represents a new lifeline to economic stability and a better chance at a fulfilling career.

We raised a seed round from Union Square Ventures, Collaborative Fund, 8VC, Moxxie, and former leaders at Affirm, General Assembly, Twitter, and companies in education & media. We're well-funded and ready to improve upward mobility and the health care labor supply in America.

With everything you do, you’ll approach your work with deep empathy for our customers, many of whose lives often veer across the poverty line. That means a connection with Ladder’s mission and the spirit to work collaboratively and with humility. And it means creating the product, platform, and infrastructure that will help our customers fight an economic system that has worked against them.

Applications for this role are open

Fill out a short form and tell us why you're interested — we'll reach out to you with next steps if there's mutual fit. A resume is optional.

A world-class internship experience

Note: Summer 2021 internship applications are still open. We are wrapping up Spring 2021 internship applications, although we may be able to take some late applications — please indicate your available timeframe.

Amidst the uncertainty of the coronavirus pandemic, our goal is still to offer a world-class internship experience.

We'll first work together to craft projects that leverage your skills and interests. Projects can span any business area, and would likely include both customer-facing tools and internal-facing tools (like coaching dashboards, data visualizations, and more). You'll be able to see the impact you make.

During the software development process, you would be integrated into our engineering team and participate in 1-on-1s, engineering standups, and code reviews. We'll also integrate you into our larger team, which means you'll have first-hand visibility into a growing startup.

Among other experiences, you'll have the chance to

  • Speak with customers and gain a deep appreciation of their day-to-day challenges
  • Discuss product goals and objectives on a cross-functional team
  • Work with our operations team as we scale and craft our core processes
  • Join in on customer calls and coaching sessions
  • Provide feedback and input into the way Ladder is run
  • Work on a deeply transparent team and meet with everyone

There is much to be done, and much to involve you in. You'll have the opportunity to build and rapidly deploy products that have immediate impact on our customers. We're a modern company, so you'll develop in a modern stack and collaborate with an exceptional team. This role is a great way to grow your technical learning and career while furthering a mission unlike nearly any other company.

Timing and expectations

This is a full-time, paid internship. For current students, chat with us about taking a semester or time off! This is something with which our team has deep experience. Regardless of what you decide, we can be helpful in your decision.

We are considering interns for Spring 2021 (January thru May/June, with flexible specific dates), Summer 2021 (May/June thru August/September, with flexible specific dates), and a "co-op"-style internship that spans both.

We have a slight preference for candidates based in or willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area, as we have an office in San Francisco. With the pandemic, however, everything is subject to change.

What you’ll do

  • Work closely with the CTO and engineering team
  • Build front-ends for products & solutions, while working across the stack
  • Engineer with resilience and stability to architect fail-safe, auditable financial systems
  • Connect with back-ends, databases, APIs, and external systems
  • Own responsibility for the success of projects by envisioning clear objectives and holding yourself & others accountable
  • Collaborate with the Operations team in a product manager-like capacity to understand stakeholders and needs
  • Respond to other job duties as they come up in a changing startup environment

What we’re looking for

Our most important criteria is hunger for impact and change. The ideal candidate is a self-starter, passionate about social good and interested in using software and technology to solve human problems. We are also looking for someone who grounds themselves in the user experience (as opposed to being purely interested in difficult technical challenges).

We are also looking for experience with

  • modern JavaScript and its ecosystem, including tools, libraries, and practices
  • writing performant React, including knowledge of recent developments (hooks, GraphQL, etc)
  • databases (PostgreSQL), modeling data, and writing performant queries
  • working on a collaborative engineering team (Scrum, ticket management)

At Ladder, we’re looking to hire people who are effective problem solvers. Please apply even if your experiences don’t exactly match what we’ve written in this job description. We’re committed to helping Americans increase their income with Ladder. If you’re passionate about equalizing access to opportunity, we want you to apply!
